Please readI ran across this online article. It got me to thinking and I really don't have any answers to this problems. What do you think.

This is really upsetting. I had no idea that the ocean was so full of waste and garbage due to the tsunami. The only thing that I can think of to help fix this issue would be for us to use big ships to use big nets and sail throughout the waters and filter out the top layer of water. It would cost a lot of money, but in the long run it's helping to save our oceans and that should be reason enough. It would be nearly impossible to get all of the garbage, but we could get a lot of it with enough effort
Mitchell Valaitis

The only type of ship that would be big enough to do what you are proposing and do it efficiently is a nuclear powered aircraft carrier. Otherwise the tanker ships would be ompletely impractical due to their fuel consumtion rates.
Erica Strnad

I agree with jake. I knew there was problems with all the wastes but I didn't know it was affected this severely. Having ships going around and cleaning the ocean would take so much time and a lot of money. I just think that people should be more careful and police should enforce the law more that we shouldn't litter
Grace Price
11/3/2013 11:49:27 pm
I agree with you that we should use ships and nets. But I disagree with your idea of spending all that money to clean the ocean. I'm sure there is a less costly way
Grace Price

I agree with your idea of using ships and nets but I disagree with your idea that has us spending a lot of money. There are alternatives that cost less money

This article was nothing new to me. I already knew that there were areas of debrie in the pacific about the size of texas, but I find that the debrie is probalbly one of the least important problems. The reason I say this is that most off the wooden debrie is biodegradeable. Plastic and nets are concening, but chemicals are probably the worst things affecting the oceans since they can iterfere with nearly all of the organisms.
Taylor Wiggins
10/30/2013 05:36:04 am
That's right. A lot of the debris found isn't harmful, but a lot is. Plastic waste is one of the main pollutants in our oceans.
Anton Vrebac
11/3/2013 10:29:19 am
I agree chemicals is the worst thing that can go in our oceans.
Matt Grauel
11/5/2013 03:59:12 pm
I agree with you completely. I hear and read all the time about how much debris there is. It is up the us how quickly we can accomplish cleaning them. But it's more about the money
Taylor Wiggins
10/30/2013 05:38:37 am
I've always known how bad the oceans really were. But unfortunately, myself and others are guilty of turning a blind eye to it. Our oceans, and our world, really is dying, and we;re the culprits. Maybe things could be right again if we found a proper means of disposing of our wastes. But no, it's just too costly for that. I don't think we'll ever find a good, permanent sollution to keep the oceans clean; a lot of the big-wigs wouldn't want to "waste the money." But eventually, it's going to come back. The ocean is dying, the fish are dying, the birds and other predators are going hungry. Sooner or later, the decaying food chain will make its way to us.
Suzi Newland
10/30/2013 10:07:38 am
This is not a surprise because I did know the water had debris and chemicals in it from the other blog we did about medicine being flushed down the toilet. In multiple movies even in happy feet they show the animals suffering from human garbage in the waters. I didn't know the problem was this big. We can never completely solve the problem just like you cannot make people do certain things. But we can try to prevent the problem from getting bigger or even make it smaller.
Katie Host

I agree Suzi, we need to be more proactive in cleaning up the oceans.

its very upsetting and devastating to know that the ocean is turning into a very toxic place. The environment on this planet is going downhill. people need to step up to this issue and form a solution to this problem, such as a campaign to stop people throwing waste in the ocean, down the sink, or even down the toilet. contamination is the ocean is at a very dangerous level to the point where people could actually get very sick and possibly die. since the water is polluted with waste, more animals and sea creatures are not going to live, people should not drink tap water, instead drink filtered water. people should not throw toxic things down the toilet, except feces and urine obviously, and garbage does not belong in the toilet nor in the ocean, it belongs in a garage waste land! I don't get why people would not step up to this problem

We shouldn't be fighting this. This is the next step of human evolution. The Earth is rebelling under our feet. It is trying to purge us from it's magnificent celestial body. We, as humans have known this for years, but haven't wanted to admit it. Subconsciously, we knew that we needed to forge our own salvation, and like a bad survivor movie, we looked to our oceans for the answer. The garbage mass is made predominately out of plastic and biodegradable materials. When the world takes it's chance to finally rid itself of us, we will flee to the mass and call it home. There, civilization will start to rebuild. Children will be born and the dead will be buried, crops from the bottles will grow, and technology will be crucial to survival. Eventually we will forget our previous existence on the land, and we will be better for it. we will live by the trash, and we will die by the trash.
The Great, Noble, Regal, Esteemed, and oh-so Valued Mr. Dr. Prof. Gov. Pres. King Sir Chad Of Hawkingston, esquire.

This is could potentially be a very big problem if there is debris still in the ocean. The debris is a pretty big reason for the pollution in the water. Its amazing that we can turn the other cheek about how bad the oceans are we know how bad it is yet people still just throw anything that they can down the drain. Making the water worse and complaining that the water is bad, and not even thinking that they are the problem. I would he lying if i said I didn't pour something down the drain that would harm the oceans.
Bill Bordonaro
11/2/2013 08:07:03 am
This is a very concerning situation. I already knew that ocean pollution was a big problem, but I didn't realize that It was having such an impact on the marine life. I don't think the pollution problem will ever be able to be solved because there is just so much debris out there. The pollution is not just a problem in the oceans, it is also happening in the great lakes too. This problem will only get worse and the effects could be catastrophic to us in the future.
Marko Filipovic
11/2/2013 08:52:24 am
I think you are right. There is too much garbage and debris in the ocean. We will probably never clean it all. However we can stop doing it. Then we can worry about cleaning it.
Marko Filipovic
11/2/2013 08:56:05 am
We should probably do something about this. One because animals live in the ocean. Two I don't feel like swimming in garbage. Three it is just plain disgusting. We can't just dump our debris anywhere. We need to start cleaning it up. It will take a long time because we have a lot of stuff in it, but we can do it.

This is upsetting to me. The fact that some fisherman are catching all of the fish and then throwing the majority of them away is very irresponsible. This article was very eye opening for me. I knew there was trash in our oceans, but I didn't know just how much it affected our waters. We really need to find a way to clean up this mess or at least cut down on the amount of garbage that ends up in the oceans.
Joe Zako

I know that the ocean is getting bad similar to Lake Erie. People just litter religiously and think nothing of it. The wood and tress, things from nature I don't really worry about as much because that will decay and go back into the earth. But the plastic and all the human made trash is what causes the problems. It's really sad what is happening to our oceans.
Anton Vrebac

I agree that it's sad that are oceans is what it is today, if it doesn't change I believe are ocean environmental could be in trouble.

I think ocean pollution is a very serious and huge deal. It's effecting a lot of organisms and the environment. I think the problem is to big to overcome but we can at least try and lower the amount of pollution in the ocean to save marine life. If the problem gets worse there can be a lot of major effects on the enviroment
Iva Bradvica

I agree with ryan! those more organisms probably lost their homes and are suffering from the polluted water from the tsunami :(

This article was eye openining for me, i figured that the oceans were probably polluted just like lake erie, etc... but I had no idea that it would get this bad, people need to start taking care of our enviornment before there is absolutley nothing left of it.

11/3/2013 02:09:32 pm
I agree with ryan. We could at least try and do something about this problem instead of just making it go away by doing nothing. The ocean is important to our world and we need these creatures to be alive and maintain life for the beauty of our oceans.

11/3/2013 03:30:15 am
This is very sad I knew the oceans were bad but not this bad.they need to work on cleaning up the oceans because sooner or later there won't be any fish left in the waters. It extremely disgusting that when people are below deck on their boat that they can hear garbage hitting their boat.
Alex Goody
11/3/2013 06:05:33 am
Its bad in its own right that these companies just dump its waste into the oceans for years, but that its got so bad that the oceans look like graveyards for fish and birds alike. Its already worse that fisherman cant find something to fish for or veterans can continue doing what they love, but cars, and chimneys in the water. Its just sickening, I would like to expand or know what more harmful thing it could be to get rid of it, and find an alternative. There has to be a way around it, somehow.
Gabriella Albanese
11/3/2013 08:49:29 am
I think this is a serious problem. There is way too much debris and garbage in the ocean. We need to find a way to clean it all up before it gets worse.
Gabriella Albanese

I agree. We probably cant clean up this mess completely but we can try to lower the amount of pollution.

Reading this made me very upset, I'm an animal lover and hearing that the debris is effecting the ecosystem around it is heart breaking to me. I knew that the oceans were polluted, but I never really pieced together that after natural disasters all the stuff has to go somewhere. I really wish there was something that we could do to at least make some of it better. Like they said though it would be more harmful to help rather then leave the stuff there. This article is so sad because it is so real and true. All of this is happening around us constantly and we're doing nothing to prevent it.
Anton Vrebac
11/3/2013 10:39:49 am
I believe that ocean population is a big deal. But I'm not surprised at all. If it doesn't change soon our environment would be in danger and resources woundnt be the same
Halle McKinley
11/3/2013 11:35:17 am
I think we need to become more proactive when it comes to taking care of our environment. It is sort of scary how toxic the oceans are becoming. The marine life is being harmed and eventually we can be harmed if it continues to get worse. I think more laws need to be created so humans stop polluting the water and then we can start gradually cleaning it out.

11/3/2013 11:47:17 am
Sadly this isn't a surprise what has happened from all we as people have treated our planet. This does sicken me so much though, I have no idea how to fix this huge problem. We can try and have more people help clean up the dry and wet land on earth. all the garbage in the water isn't just affecting us but the animal life as well has decreased.
Brian Keller
11/3/2013 12:11:31 pm
I'm really surprised at the amount of debris left in the ocean after tsunamis. We really need to do more to help out everyone that is affected by the debris.
Tom Kruse
11/3/2013 12:42:00 pm
Hmm, this is a challenge. I think each fishing boat shouls also be equipped with a rubbish retrieval claw or something that cleans the ocean. They're already going out there, why look out for some garbage? This will very slowly decrease amount of nonbiodegradable objects floating the ocean, as long there is no more dumping or natural disasters.
Anna Mijatovic
11/3/2013 02:07:31 pm
This just breaks my heart. I knew that sea creatures were getting less and less but to think not a group of some kind is in the ocean swimming with each other and what not is sad. There really should be something done about this because one day there really wont be anything there at all. We need to think fast in an act of some kind and stop this.
Sam Weaver
11/3/2013 02:08:03 pm
This is so sad I always knew that the oceans were polluted but I didn't think it was this bad. So many animals and plants are dying it's horrible. And I don't understand why no organizations are trying to help or do anything about it .
Ashley Nye
11/3/2013 02:29:44 pm
I agree with Jacob that we should find a way to filter our ocean. It would be costly and probably difficult but it would definitely improve our environment. Littering is a huge role in our water pollution today and it is taking a negative effect on our environment as a whole.
Colin Curtis
11/3/2013 02:35:37 pm
It's too bad that there is so much garbage in the ocean and not a lot of things being done about it. We should be more careful what we bring in and out of the ocean. Like the fishing boats, there are a lot of things that strip the ocean's resources and pollute the ocean, and that is unlikely to change without a lot of work and cooperation.
Kelly Lang
11/3/2013 03:04:18 pm
This article was very heart breaking to read. I had no idea there was that much garbage and crap in the ocean. It's sad that it affected all the living organisms in the ocean that badly too. I hope we can get it back to the way it used to be. All those chemicals and garbage in there is not good at all.
Anthony DiFrancesco
11/3/2013 03:51:31 pm
i didnt know the issue was this serious. its killing all those fish and the underwater population. we would have to get some type of big net and drag it along the ocean to get all the garbage. thats the only thing i can think of to fix this problem.
Grace Connolly
11/3/2013 03:56:47 pm
The effect that pollution and litter have on our oceans is obviously a very serious problem, one that I am not sure there is actually a solution to. I did know that there was a lot of trash in the oceans, but I was not aware it was quite that much. All that I can think to do for know is to just be as responsible as you can be on your own by not littering or wasting water.
Joshua Flack
11/3/2013 03:59:27 pm
I knew the world was in major trouble but not to this extent. We as a society are responsible for what ever we do to our planet. Sadly we are destroying it day by day and if we don't figure out something soon the entire planet could be devastated beyond repair. Knowledge is our best weapon to fight against this problem. People must be educated by any means necessary so that the ecosystem has a fighting chance. The destruction of the oceans would certainly mean the destruction of the land as well. We must think of a solution quickly before the timer runs out.
Hannah Thomas

This article made me very sad. Nature is like a double negative... Or whatever you want to call it. Tsunami's ruin peoples lives and then with all the stuff that people own, it gets washed back into the ocean, hurting the sea life. I think we should use ships and very large nets to clean up all the mess. I wish there was a way to keep the ocean cler so that way we don't hurt all the little fishy
Joey Belz
11/4/2013 12:22:22 am
I knew that the oceans were always not the cleanest places.. Just think about now many people probably place chemicals in it just out of laziness. The chemicals are the most harmful considering it will affect all of the species in the ocean but the debrie is a tiny factor.. But we still need to take action, even though there is those people that don't have any respect.
Joey Belz
11/4/2013 12:23:26 am
I agree with Aleah, people need to stop with the littering because at this rate the oceans will be just as bad as Lake Erie.
Reagan
11/4/2013 12:29:38 am
This is and isn't concerning at the same time to me. It is because of the possible damage the chemicals from this garbage could potentially do but also the sheer size of the oceans makes me feel like humans alone couldn't do so much damage as to completely make our oceans uninhabitable but maybe I'm wrong time will tell.
Lexy Febres
11/6/2013 11:44:15 pm
I agree with Reagan I think this is and isn't a problem, yeah something has to be done but I don't know if we are in the place to be able to fix this
Tyler Formica
11/4/2013 01:10:25 am
There has to be a reason that there are less and less fish being caught each year. I think that factor is pollution. All kinds of things are always being dumped into our waterways and a lot of that stuff is poison that could kill or give mutations to the fish. We need to clean up the crap that is in the water so we preserve our marine life.
Joe Zako
11/4/2013 01:25:42 am
I am surprised that their is so much garbage in our oceans. I knew that their was garbage in it, but was unaware of how much. Something certainly has to be done and this will most likely be a lengthy and tedious process.

Another way is to set up stations in the oceans and on shores that would filter it out
Frank Valentic

This is not a good thing that we have. We should try and clean the ocean. With the trash that came in from the tsunami we need to clean it. We are polluting out oceans and not making it safe for the wildlife to survive. We rely on the fish for food so we killing our food source.

Speaking of a lack of fish..When I was a kid people were fishing every weekend on the wharf shoulder to shoulder taking buckets of fish home..Nowa days only a sparse amount of fisherman on the wharf and empty buckets...Lots of street runoff poluting the local waters.. I also see signs posted now, Hazard stay out of the water..Dog poop all over the beach too. Just too hip to pick it up...When the ocean is finally dead so are we. I'm not suprised.

I understand that the waste in the oceans is a huge problem but also trying to get rid of this waste might create more problem such as waste in the air from burning fuel and our economy doesn't need to spend money on things that aren't completely necessary. So I agree this is an issue but is it worth it to solve one problem but create another?
Mekenna

This is very sad. I had no idea that there was this much pollution going on. I found it very disturbing that the boasts paint reacted with some chemical in the water. I mean how polluted can something be that it actually reacts with the paint on the boat? I think a major cleanup needs to be done fast, so the fish will once again populate this area.
