I know from my personal experiences when I was in college studying chemistry, I was known as "Anglo Girl" and that I found it hard to compete academically with my fellow Asian students.
Was I not as smart? I studying more than I ever had in my previous undergrad and high school careers but could barely keep up to my peers. Was I to believe that it was a genetic or cultural bias that made me less. Overtime, I came to realize that my fellow students did have an advance over me, they, from an early age were taught, pushed and encouraged to studying up to 8 hours a day on their schooling (not counting the time they were in school). My friend Ming was from Korea and told me stories of how she basically memorized entire books just so her family would be proud. To Ming, her achievements were not just hers but her famiies and village since they gave her the financially backing to attended schools that they other children could not. If she succeeded; her famiiy succeed. I am not sure that is a good thing but reality is that many culturals still practice that.
Here is a current article from the Washington Post in an update --> http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/04/08/forget-tiger-moms-asian-american-students-succeed-because-its-expected-say-scholars/?Post+generic=%3Ftid%3Dsm_twitter_washingtonpost
I know my daughters track coach always encourages his athletes "to be bigger than Willoughby" translatation, don't peak in high school. I believe he is basically saying the same thing as the Tiger Mom but in a more politically correct way.
My question is...do you believe that to be true? Specific groups have a cultural advanced? or maybe because of culture they lack the advanced?
How do you see yourself in this portrayal?
