I ran across this article in Mother Jones - really really interesting. I am not sure how I think about this. I see the point but I think there more out there. Please read - http://m.motherjones.com/environment/2013/01/lead-crime-link-gasoline

Since 1960, rape rates had nearly quadrupled, murder had quintupled, and robbery had grown fourteenfold. This just mind boggles me! But other than that this article kind of confused me. Are they trying to compare how lead intake can cause people to commit criminal actions?

I was confused too kasey. I think that they were indeed trying to plant the idea that lead fuels criminal behavior and intentions.

I feel like they are trying to make reasoning for natural human behaviors and that they see digging too deep for something that isn't even there

I agree with you ray. Why would you even think about digging if you know that something may not be there, it would just be a waste of time and money to dig

I never realized how much lead really did affect us. I knew that it did and the lead based paint was not good for us but I didnt realize how much the lead that used to be in gasoline has an influence on crime rate, and its hard to believe that all of this lead is still in our soil and can still influence how people act and their IQ level. How can we get the soil cleaned? 20 billion dollars is a large price to get the lead out of everything but it would lower the crime rate and help to higher IQ levels, along with lowering the amount of children that truly have ADHD, since were know there are many children that are misdiagnosed, lowering the number of kids that really do have it may also help to lower the number of misdiagnoses. By spending this money, we will also be saving money in the future because there will be less people committing crimes so there will be less people in jail. The only downfall of this could be that we would not need as many people in law enforcement and people could lose their jobs but these people could be repurposed to get rid of lead and to keep lead out of our daily lives. I've never realized how much lead could influence crime rates, IQ levels, and ADHD sufferers.

I'm in the same boat as you Emily, never really realized how big of an effect lead based paints and other products effected us. Come to think of it I was kinda getting nervous reading this article because all summer long I worked on old properties scrapping and the old lead based paint off of the houses and re-painting them with the new lead-less paint. The person I worked for made sure that as I was scrapping the old paint off, there was a tarp on the ground to catch the old paint to make sure it did not go into the soil because he was aware of the negative effects, but I wish i would have worn a mask of something to protect myself from breathing near this dangerous substance.

I didn't realize how much lead affected us. I don't get why police are so against the theory. They shouldn't care what the reason is, only what they can do to help. If future generations are to be safe, then the lead in soil needs to be taken care of. It won't matter that we took away lead paint and gasoline. If there's still lead in soil then no one is safe.

I agree Alexis. We need to start finding ways to clean all of this lead in the air/soil because if future generations are affected, crime rate could possibly increase as well as learning disailities and behavorial problems in many young people, just like what happened in New York

I personally think that this is crazy how rape, murder, and various types of murders increased. Also, i did not really stop to think of how much lead really affected us and how the police only care about how it happened. What the police should be worrying about is how to fix the problem

This article is crazy to believe that so much lead am has contributed to the number factors in society. Like all the murders and rapes that have increased! All the lead that contributes to a IQ level and ADHD. What's being done about any of this? Nothing like usual

Keep in mind that this is nothing but a theory, there is no concrete evidence although there are some suggestions that make it plausible, and to answer your question about whats being done about any of this? Lead based paints and other materials have been banned in the United States. Thats a big bold move don't you think?

I don't get how lead is the effect of all these increases in rape and murder. How about that's just the behavior that some people are raised in and they think it is exceptable. Don't really get the whole effect lead had on ppl

Its crazy to think that by simply adding lead in gasoline it can create such a huge crime boom, and the same efect exists in so many other countrys. It just goes to show how changing one little thing can have huge effects in the future thast no one can see coming. but even though our car emissions are lead free today all the lead that was emitted back then now rests in the soil and can come back to bite us.

The results were dramatic. In 1996, the New York Times reported that crime had plunged for the third straight year, the sharpest drop since the end of Prohibition. Since 1993, rape rates had dropped 17 percent, assault 27 percent, robbery 42 percent, and murder an astonishing 49 percent. Giuliani was on his way to becoming America's Mayor and Bratton was on the cover of Time. It was a remarkable public policy victory.this is crazy to believe that two people can change the crime rates so effectively by their actions and how they do it.its good that they cut a lot of percentage of crime down.this is pretty intresting.

I would really like to see the rest of the remaining lead disappear and see the results. The amount of crime discuessed in this article is crazy. At the end, it made it sound so easy to get rid of the lead so what would be the harm in doing just that? Its obviously not safe if two kids died from just a house being redone. I really hope something is done about this instead of just being ignored like before.

Lead poisoning has always lingered in the minds of human beings, but not to te extent of this article. I am very ignorant when it comes to the physical effect of lead poisoning and I had absolutely no idea that criminal activity and IQ levels can be effected by lead. When I take a trip to my pediatrics office there are always lead warnings on the back of the doors, but I never realize how serious lead levels could be. As far as eliminating sources of lead suck ad gasoline and the lead found in the soil, all humans should want to purify as much of the world as we can. The article implies a vibe that the economy would be effected in a negative way by purifying the soil and other lead sources, but by preventing lead poisoning the world can have many positive effects and outcomes.

I am a very realistic thinker and when people try to link stupid things together to blame one thing for another witch have nothing to do with one another therefore I think this is just something thought up to make a story. I don't se linking lead paint to crime.

I have never really put two and two together. Who would have though that lead could effect crime rates and IQ and that sort of thing. The thing I find most interesting is that lead found somewhere as common as gasoline and soil affects people as much as this article said it does. I believe that in the future, we need to work on removing this large amount of lead and determine if this lead is positively directly related to this crime rate. Hopefully this discovery will lower the crime rate and the amount of diagnoses because of lead intake.

It's crazy to think about how much effect lead can have on human beings. Although the many theories that were talked about in the article have alot of truth to them, in the end I believe that 'too much lead intake' cannot be the ULTIMATE reason why someone committed a murder or raped someone. Due to the fact that lead can also lead to other things like learning disabilities and behavorial problems in young children and adults, I believe it is a very important to spend the necessary money to clean up all the remaining lead left in the environment. It's not too costly, and we need to protect the future generation from this toxic molecule.

The world is becoming worse and worse each and everyday. No one in this world can control what people do anymore, including police. Rape and murder is starting to get to the point where its common to people. Lead is in our gas and is now affecting us in human and natural resources. Once again it will end up getting worse and no one will do anything about it.

Wow I can't believe lead can affect people so much. The fact that it can have so many negative effects on a person such as contributing to ADHD is unbelievable. Everyone was pretty much affected by it because of it being in gasoline. It's crazy that it has been linked to the reason for those crime rates.

It's really crazy to me that an element like that can effect how people are when they become adults. and it surprises me that not much study was put into the lead poisoning until in the later years. I believe that lead is a real problem since all this studying was put into it and the evidence is all there with the graphs comparing New Orleans to the amounts of lead. The effects that lead has on the human can seriously damage us and will always be a problem without us even knowing it.

It's crazy to think about all the impacts lead has on our lives. The fact that lead is still in soil is unsafe and something needs to be done. The police and other law enforcers should be willing to do whatever is necessary to fix this problem. Until this lead is completely gone, we will continue to have negative outcomes on everyday life; crimes, lower IQs, and even troubles with ADHD. Something must be done.

It's hard to believe that lead plays a role in violent crimes over the decades. No one would have ever thought lead would play a role in rape, robbery, etc. the fact that lead is still in our soil today where our food grows and kids play in is a frightening thought. It's good that research has shown us that lead was becoming a problem and was resolved before too much damage was done. This article is still hard to wrap my brain around.

Honestly, this article didnt really persuade me the way i think it was supposed to. I mean I get they have alot of statistics but i dont really see how they think that could be one of the main causes. I mean hereditary among allot of other things lead to mental problems.

Its crazy to think that children growing up and being exposed to lead could lead them to do crazy things as they get older. i didnt realize the true effects of lead and how it could creat lower I.Qs and ADHD. i dont think anyone knew that lead would play a huge part in such violent crimes

I don't really believe how elad can affect people to that much of an extreme. It may cause ADHD and lower IQ's but that's about it. I think people are thinking too far into the lead idea when it might have to do with a change in society or something of another nature. This idea doesn't persuade me Comments are closed.
