Comment on whether or not your knowledge of black holes have increased to the link and reading?
In this chapter for general and in AP, a topic is discussed in the text in a glancing matter, that is in a brief overview. One of the biggest questions I get each year from Physics' students is that of black holes. We have a class in astronomy, but if you haven't taken it, your ability to understand the concept is very elementary. Here is a link for NASA Goddard Space which does a very nice job explaining black holes. The link --> http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/science/know_l2/black_holes.html
Hopefully black holes aren't such a mystery anymore. Comment on whether or not your knowledge of black holes have increased to the link and reading?

My knowledge of black holes has increased because of this article. I did not know that a black hole is about 10-15 times as massive as the sun. I didn't think black holes were that massive. Black holes are also hard to see. I thought that black holes were easy to see in space because I thought since space is filled with stars that when you looked for a black hole, you'd see it. This article helped me learn more about black holes

I agree with Grace. I figured since there were stars in spice that are very bright you would be able to see the black hole easily.

This article has also expanded my knowledge on black holes. I already knew a few things but this has just been an eye opener for new things.

It's realm amazing how huge they are, isn't it? Even the smaller ones are incredibly massive.

I would have never thought that black holes had an important contribution to outer space. I have always thought that the sun was the most powerful star in space, but it turns out that black holes affect us more than the sun does. Black holes affect gravity and many other things that occur in space. I always knew that black holes were hard to be seen, but never knew the importance of them.

Balck holes are just another part of a stars life cycle. Truthfully our sun is the most imoprtant star to us, but it is not very powerful. This is a good thing because if it were a more powerful star then it would be impossible for organic life to exist on Earth.

There is actually a star that is hundreds of times bigger than our sun. Lots of stars are bigger and more powerful than our sun.

I fond most of the information in this article to be review for the most part. The only part that gave me some more clarification was the explaination of the volume of black holes. I already knew that a black hole with the mass of the Earth would be smaller than a marble, but I did not know exactly how small black holes truely were.

Yes my knowledge did increase from the article. I already knew black holes were dead stars but that's it. I didn't know they emit x-rays and that if our sun died that our Milky Way would still be in orbit.

If the sun turned into a black hole, the X-rays would be the last thing to hurt us. The high gravity would suck us in within minutes or even seconds

My knowledge of back holes has increased from reading this article. To start off i did not know that black holes were as massive as the sun. I just thought that were kind just there. I also never heard of The Schwarzschild radius, it seems like a german name but it is very interesting. Thinking about getting sucked into the black hole is a very scary thought to me. I hope that never happens.

This article was pretty interesting. I knew most of it since I have read a lot of physics books, but some of it was new to me, like how objects being sucked in emit fluctuating radiation. One thing that I would like to add is that black holes do "emit" particles, since one virtual particle (virtual particles are a pair of particles that spontaneously appear and annihilate each other) can get sucked into a black hole and the other can escape.

I think it's cool that even though we can't see black holes, X-ray emissions from them are evidence enough. I wonder why neutron stars and black holes are compared to each other.
